The emergency-stop with magnetic switch is a safety feature that is used especially with reverse belt rotation (downhill). The athlete or patient is connected to the magnetic switch at the user terminal via a rip cord at  the waist belt. 

In case of an emergency the magnet gets ripped of from the user terminal and the running machine stops immediately.

  The rip cord with the magnetic swith does not prevent from falling down.

lt-models, are running machines without user terminal, that have a separate emergency-stop-button at the handrail as standard.
